What is WeChat

What is Wechat

WeChat is China’s largest social network. But it is also now where people book a taxi, order food, do their banking, make online payments, online shopping and so much more. The platform is a ‘closed network’.

WeChat enables companies and individuals to create “WeChat Official Platform” in order to promote their company or brand. These accounts are to some extent similar to Facebook Pages: anybody can follow them and will then receive push notifications from them. When accessing one of these accounts, you can usually click a bottom-menu linking to a HTML5 website which might sell products or services.

To a large extent, WeChat marketing is the art of gaining followers to your account, getting them actively engaged with it and eventually converting them to customers through the bottom-menu which they can use to purchase items or reach out to you.

Online to Offline (O2O)

  • Online to offline or O2O is the link between ‘online discovery’ and actual commerce in the physical world. The main driver behind O2O is mobile commerce. More than 92 percent of Chinese mobile internet users used mobile payments in 2018 thanks to Wechat Pay and Alipay platforms.

  • The fast improvement of wireless networks, the large market of new internet users, the high adoption rate of QR codes and the fact that more Chinese people own a smartphone than a traditional computer offer a suitable environment for the development of online services.

  • The WeChat ecosystem has resulted in an economy of merchants, members, business we-official hubs, we-payment, micro-activity. This has formed mainstream online and offline WeChat interactive marketing.
